About the Authors
Carey Chisholm, M.D.
Dr Chisholm is a retired Emergency Medicine physician who spent the majority of his career in an educational role, first at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and then at Indiana University School of Medicine. He served as an EM Residency Director for 28 years at these institutions. Nationally he served as the President of The Council of EM Residency Directors (CORD) and The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). An avid fan of outdoor activities to include trail running and cycling, he would put lung cancer last on the list of diseases to contract. Following retirement he also focused on developing his photography skills.
Nicole Pelly, M.D.
Dr. Pelly is an anesthesiologist and palliative care doctor who believes in the power of her patients’ stories to guide their dying journey. To live her life to the fullest, she travels to far flung corners of the planet with an emphasis on Denmark and finds her spiritual home on Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Personal experiences with breast cancer and Guillain Barre Syndrome have opened her eyes to wisdom and suffering being intertwined gifts. Cooking, knitting, reading and her son focus her hands and heart in the now.

Acknowledgments for Contributions
Josh Mugele
Josh Mugele is an emergency medicine doctor who trained with Carey at IU from 2010 to 2013. In large part because of Carey’s influence, he became a residency program director and is trying to build a new residency in Northeast Georgia, where he lives with his wife, Jody."
Jennifer Sullivan
Jennifer Sullivan, MD MPH is a 2005 graduate of the IUEM EM/Peds residency. She trained under the program director leadership of Carey Chisholm, then immediately went to work for him as an assistant program director. Over a series of years and encouragement, Carey was the single most important influence in Jen’s life, both personally and professionally. From designing an advocacy program to a career move into state government as Health and Human Services Secretary, Carey is a constant listening ear and critical thinker. Most importantly, Jen developed her skills as a baker in order to participate in Decadent Dinners, for which she will be forever grateful.
Photography
Jim Davidson (IUEM 2003) and Mark Vogt
These two challenged me to kick up my photography skills, particularly for wildlife shots. Mark is a professional nature photographer (https://www.markvogt.us/) while Jim pursues this as a compulsive hobby passion. I am thankful for the myriad of skills they shared with me.
